About Me

Original Ink Drawing:
"Kidney Fern" - NZ Fern.

Kidney Ferns - Trichomanes reniforme - are a very special delight in the New Zealand bush.

They are easily identified because there is nothing else quite like them, and when caught in a patch of sunlight their characteristic kidney-shaped fronds light up, showing clearly the veins radiating outwards, and the sori standing out around the edges of the spore-bearing fronds.

In some places they form extensive mats on the forest floor and the roots of trees.

They are grouped with the filmy ferns and are common in the bush in most parts of New Zealand except in the east coast of the South Island.
